Coronation Street is planning to throw open its doors to the public once again.

Fans were thrilled when ITV began operating tours from the old Granada Studios set when the soap moved to its new purpose-built HD studios in Media City, but devastated when the tours ceased as the site's redevelopment began.

But now the show is hoping to give fans the chance to visit the brand new set on Sundays.

Bosses have applied to Trafford Council to open the doors of the set and let soap fans see the cobbles up close on Sundays.

They want to begin the tours in April, but only on Sundays, so the show will still be able to complete its filming schedule on the other six days.

Tours would last for 90 minutes and up to 1,850 people would be shown the Rovers Return, the famous cobbles and the house where Gail Platt's many, many husbands lived and eventually died by fair means or foul.

It's hoped the re-opening of the tours will create 12 new jobs.

But more than that, it could provide a £4m boost to the local economy as people flock to the area from across the country and world for the chance to walk on the world famous cobbles.

However, fans won't have the chance to drink in the Rovers as the plans claim, according to the Daily Star,

It reads: "“No alcohol will be consumed on the premises as part of the tour."

The plans were reportedly submitted to the council last week and will be considered later this month.

A Coronation Street spokeswoman said: "ITV continually explores opportunities to bring our audiences closer to their favourite shows and we can confirm a planning application has been made to allow public access to the Coronation Street site at MediaCityUK.

"This application is an early part of the process as we look at the possibility of opening the programme's external set in Summer 2018."
